About Phyllis Andrews
I started painting when I turned 40. It seemed like a good time to embark on a new venture and I had always wanted to paint. In my jobs as a biochemist and then a homemaker I hadn't made much time for artistic interests, so painting was a completely new and very different challenge. My husband gave me an easel, canvases and paints for the big birthday, and I got started.
Sources of inspiration have always included a family farm in western NC and country scenes I see on the back roads and trails of my bicycle trips. Over time I have also developed an interest in telling stories with paintings. In these illustrations I can create an alternate world whose characters can be my companions or my alter ego. In one of my fantasy worlds I have befriended a snowman, and in another two red bicycles have become animated and are traveling the world with their adventures and mishaps chronicled in paintings. Whether my images are of real places that I have observed or imaginary scenes and characters, they take me to places that I love. I hope that my work may also transport your soul to a place of beauty, fun and peace. This is part of what keeps the work challenging and interesting and makes me want to continue.
While that challenge plays the biggest role in making my work interesting and satisfying, it is also gratifying to have some tangible success. I have been exhibited in many juried shows and received special recognition a number of times, including being a finalist twice in The Artist's Magazine Annual competition, an international competition, and being juried into a National Oil and Acrylic Painters Society (NOAPS) Best of America 2018 exhibit. My work is in several galleries in North Carolina: Blowing Rock Frameworks and Gallery in Blowing Rock; Bull City Art and Frame Company in Durham; and Taupe Gallery in North Wilkesboro, NC. You are cordially invited to visit my world of paintings in these galleries, as well as in my website.
